Restoring Civility

Dear Members of the School Board and fellow citizens,

As a future school board member, I believe that restoring civility amongst school members, the community, and within schools is crucial to creating a positive and supportive learning environment for all students and teachers. Incivility has no place in our schools, and we must take decisive action to address it at all levels.

First and foremost, we must prioritize empathy, respect, and understanding amongst school members. This means encouraging students, teachers, and administrators to listen to one another, value one another’s unique experiences, and engage in constructive dialogue. We must also create an environment where everyone feels safe and supported, free from bullying, harassment, or intimidation.

Second, we must work closely with the community to promote civility in our schools. This means collaborating with parents, businesses, and community organizations to foster a culture of respect and appreciation. By engaging with the community, we can promote positive role models, encourage volunteerism, and create opportunities for students to learn from different perspectives.

Finally, we must address incivility within schools directly. This means investing in programs that promote life skill development, conflict resolution, and restorative justice. We must also provide support and resources to students who are experiencing emotional or mental health issues.

Restoring civility requires a multifaceted approach that involves everyone in our schools and community. By prioritizing empathy, respect, and understanding, we can create a positive and supportive learning environment where everyone can thrive.
